Cas Friese (b. 1979) is a mixed media artist working primarily in photography, based in the tri-state area. Her work navigates the tension between light and ethereal elements and darker perspectives, exploring opposites through familiar visual relationships and tonal contrasts. Known for her large-scale, unique works on linen, Friese is drawn to the subtle, often fleeting details of flora in their waning moments.
Her practice begins with photography, which the artist transforms by printing onto unconventional materials—most notably linen, conceptualized as modern-day tapestries. Through a process of deconstruction and hand-finishing, Friese underscores the connection between the unraveling textile and the impermanence of her subject matter. In addition to these singular works, she also produces a limited edition print collection on paper, drawn from various series.
