biography
Cas Friese (b. 1979) is a mixed media artist operating primarily in photography, based in the tri-state area. Friese's signature characteristics in her work oscillate from light and ethereal to a dark perspective; opposites with familiar visual relationships and tonal expressions. Known for her large-scale unique works on linen, Friese is attracted to subtle details in flora, often in their waning moments.
Friese's practice begins with photography transformed by printing onto uncommon materialities, most noteworthy her works on linen, referred to conceptually as modern-day tapestries. Friese’s deconstructed hand-finished works illustrate the connection between the unwinding of the textile and the subject's finite existence. The artist stitch-mounts the works to museum board to float within a frame emphasizing their organic, delicate nature.
“There is beauty in the simplest of things that can easily be overlooked....my goal is to draw attention to the magnificence in the details, both literally and metaphorically.”
