ARDEN WHITE GALLERY is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition featuring Atlanta, GA-based artist Kristen Giorgi and Brooklyn, NY-based sculptor Ara Thorose. The works of both artists produce playful, otherworldly environs with their respective mediums.
Giorgi’s swirling abstractions paintings work in tandem with Ara’s flowing sculptures that bring together form and function with their sinuous appearances.
The presentation of Giorgi’s latest body of work demonstrates her adept use of diluted acrylic on linen to create multi-colored, multi-layered plains. Giorgi’s large-scale works recall the color field approach to paintings popularized in the 1950s and 1960s with her liquified acrylics seeping through the linens. Each piece exemplifies the artist’s organic process, attention to color, texture, and gesture that work in concert to produce rapturous paintings.
KRISTEN GIORGI artist statement
I obsess over capturing a moment that transcends the eye and transports the viewer to a dream-like place. Picture those rare moments in life where we find ourselves somewhere so beautiful that it seems unreal — almost impossible to describe in words or to capture through photograph. This body of work is a collection of these experiences, filtered through emotions both delicate yet dynamic. The works focus on the contrast found in the subtleties of color and layer while celebrating nature as I see it and as I “see” what may exist beyond.
Armenian-American designer Ara Thorose utilizes rubber, fabric, and steel to make his one-of-a-kind pieces. The bent cylinders are weaved together to engulf and embrace one another into transfigured chairs and other furniture pieces that are of bodily proportion.
ARA THOROSE artist statement
I design through a kind of three-dimensional calligraphy, drawing fluid, and undulating lines into concise forms. They are sculptures, drawing into the space of functional objects. I use the width of my thigh as a basis for the cylinders to warm the abstraction of the work.
