Flow State

4 October - 10 November 2024

ARDEN + WHITE is pleased to present Flow State, an exhibition of new work by Marcel Rozek on view from October 4 through November 10, 2024, marking Rozek’s second show with the gallery.

In his latest body of work, the artist draws inspiration from his local surroundings, seamlessly integrating the natural world into his artistic vision. Through a distinctive approach to color field painting, Rozek constructs layers that evoke abstract forms of ridges, hills, and cascades, all bathed in rich, flowing colors that reflect the landscape of his Southern California home. The layered hues mirror the rolling contours of the hills, offering a visual journey that encourages viewers to explore the subtle emotions and sensations tied to the sense of place.

The exhibition title, Flow State, refers to the psychological concept of being fully immersed in an activity—an idea central to Rozek’s painting process. It also evokes the fluid, ever-changing rhythms of the seasons and the cascading flow of waterfalls and paint. Much like the paintings, the title captures a balance between the focused mental state and the tangible, physical forces that express movement and transformation.

Rozek's process involves pouring liquefied oil paint onto raw, unprimed canvas, allowing the paint to seep and flow across the surface with a controlled spontaneity. This technique, rooted in the practice of early abstractionists and the Washington Color School artists, produces dynamic color interactions and diffused compositions that embody the fluidity of nature. Contrasting shades and tones create a hypnotic symphony, engaging and absorbing the viewer’s senses. Through Rozek’s bold use of color, application, and scale, Flow State transforms the gallery into a space for collective meditation, with an appreciation for the interplay between the personal and the environmental.

A reception with the artist will be held Friday, October 4th from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.
