ARDEN + WHITE is pleased to present Untitled, a new series of unique linen works by Cas Friese. This body of work is imbued with organic nuance and metaphor, capturing fields and flora beyond their peak bloom. Friese studies these subjects outside their most prolific moment, revealing the beauty in their quiet transformation. From grasses and dried shrubs to wilting flora, thistles, and humble ground-level views of common flowers, she draws attention to their inherent delicacy and magnificence in every stage of existence.
Friese’s process subverts traditional tapestry-making, beginning with photographic prints on archival linen that she meticulously unweaves fiber by fiber. This act of deconstruction highlights the intricate weave of the fabric, allowing the image to dissolve into its frayed edges. She then refines the perimeter, trimming and reintegrating loose threads to restore a sense of order. The completed works are suspended within a frame, hand-stitched at the top to museum board, leaving the sides and bottom free to hang naturally—creating space for the work to subtly shift and evolve over time.
As the world’s rhythms blur and seasons continuously merge, Friese finds resonance between the unraveling of fabric, the impermanence of her subjects, and the fleeting nature of transformation.
