THE ART OF BLACKSMITHING

Lane Walkup began her blacksmithing career over a decade ago under the mentorship of a family friend. Not long after learning the basics, Walkup purchased an antique coal forge and never looked back — what first started as a hobby became a full-time career.

The sculptor’s works are concerned with otherworldly themes, the unseen, the mystical, and the metaphysical. She takes advantage of negative space when making her unrestrained and illusionary pieces. For Walkup, the symbols she welds are interpretations of feelings often making patterns that help her find a sense of comfort in the world.

In the beginning, Walkups works focused on functional forms; from knives to wall hooks.  Then evolved into small functional fashion and interior forms with whimsy and playfulness.  She spent years making candle holders, small flower sculptures, and even wireframe handbags. Over time her works grew not only in her own creative comforts, but in complexity and size.   Walkup really captured the imagination of many when she created her metal-framed living room - a surreal visual experience reminiscent of drawing.

Now Walkup focuses on making larger-scale works, collaborating on commissions, and art shows.  Her work has now been shown across the country in various group shows and is coming to ARDEN + WHITE GALLERY this March in Elysian Gardens.
